Steak and Rice
- 1 pound sirloin or ribeye steak, cut into bite-sized strips
- 1 cup long-grain white rice, rinsed
- 2 cups low sodium beef broth
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
Butter and Aromatics
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons honey
Garnish
- Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
- Prepare Ingredients: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Slice the steak into 1-inch bite-sized strips. Mince the garlic and finely chop the onion.
- Brown the Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add steak strips in a single layer without overcrowding. Cook 2-3 minutes per side until browned but not fully cooked. Season with salt and pepper. Remove steak and set aside.
- Sauté Aromatics: Reduce heat to medium. Add 1 tablespoon butter to the skillet and melt. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 2 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Toast the Rice: Stir rinsed rice into the skillet with onions and garlic. Toss to coat with butter and toast for about 2 minutes.
- Add Liquids and Honey: Slowly add 2 cups beef broth and 2 tablespoons honey. Stir gently and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Simmer with Steak: Return steak strips to the skillet, nestling them on top of the rice. Dot remaining 2 tablespoons butter over everything. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and reduce heat to low. Simmer gently for 15-20 minutes until rice is tender and liquid absorbed. Avoid lifting the lid frequently.
- Finish and Serve: Once cooked, fluff rice with a fork and gently mix steak into the rice. Adjust salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
Notes
- Use low sodium beef broth to control saltiness and enhance flavor.
- Avoid overcrowding the skillet when browning steak to ensure proper searing.
- Do not lift the lid during simmering to allow rice to cook evenly.
- Can substitute sirloin or ribeye with another tender steak cut as preferred.
- Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness.
