This Pizza Grilled Cheese recipe combines the comforting melty goodness of a classic grilled cheese with the vibrant flavors of a pizza. Featuring layers of mozzarella, Parmesan, turkey pepperoni, and marinara sauce between buttery, seasoned bread slices, it’s a quick and satisfying meal perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Butter

  • 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
  • 2 tbsp butter (softened)

Filling

  • ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 12 slices of turkey pepperoni (or your preferred topping)

Seasonings and Garnish

  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice. Sprinkle the buttered side evenly with garlic powder and Italian seasoning to infuse extra pizza flavor as it toasts.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich: Place two slices of bread on a flat surface, buttered side down. Spread marinara sauce on the unbuttered sides. Layer shredded mozzarella cheese, grated Parmesan, turkey pepperoni slices, and any additional toppings you prefer. Top with the remaining two slices of bread, buttered side up.
  3. Toast the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on one side, pressing down lightly with a spatula to help the cheese melt and the bread brown evenly. Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook another 3-4 minutes on the other side until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Remove sandwiches from the skillet and let them cool for a minute. Slice each sandwich in half and garnish with chopped fresh basil for a fragrant, fresh flavor. Optionally serve with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Use your favorite type of bread for varied texture and flavor—sourdough gives a tangy crunch, whole wheat adds nuttiness, and white bread delivers softness.
  • Adjust the pepperoni or toppings to suit your taste or dietary preferences—try vegetables or different meats.
  • Cook the sandwich on medium-low to ensure the cheese melts fully without burning the bread.
  • If you prefer a crispier sandwich, press it with a panini press or use a weighted spatula while toasting.
  • Leftover sandwiches can be reheated in a skillet or oven, but best enjoyed fresh.
