Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

Seasonings and Dairy

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (10.7 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup (with or without garlic)
  • 1 can (10.7 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheese

Others

  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray a 9×13 inch baking pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Beef Mixture: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef with diced onions and minced garlic until the beef is no longer pink and the onions are soft. Drain any excess fat and season the mixture with salt and black pepper.
  3. Layer Potatoes and Beef: Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom of the prepared pan. Spread half of the cooked beef mixture over the potatoes.
  4. Combine Soups and Milk: In a bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, condensed cream of chicken soup, evaporated milk, and regular milk until well combined. Pour half of this soup mixture over the beef layer. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese evenly on top.
  5. Repeat Layers: Add another layer of potatoes, the remaining beef mixture, the rest of the soup mixture, and finish with the remaining shredded cheese on top.
  6. Cover and Bake: Cover the pan with a piece of foil, tenting it so it doesn’t touch the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
  7. Finish Baking Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes to let the cheese brown and the casserole cook through.
  8. Rest Before Serving: Remove from the oven and allow the casserole to rest for 10 minutes on a wire rack before slicing. This helps the flavors meld and makes serving easier.

Notes

  • Slicing the Potatoes: Slice the potatoes thinly and uniformly to ensure even cooking throughout the casserole.
  • Let It Rest: Allow the casserole to rest for at least ten minutes before serving so the flavors combine well.
  • Use Time-Savers: Pre-chopped onions and minced garlic can save preparation time without sacrificing flavor.
  • Even Layers: Assemble the casserole evenly for consistent texture and taste in every bite.
  • Cook Covered: Covering with foil prevents the top from drying out, removing it toward the end helps achieve a nice golden crust.
