These Ghost Taco Hand Pies are a fun and delicious handheld meal featuring a savory taco filling encased in flaky pie crusts. Filled with seasoned ground meat and veggies, then baked to golden perfection, they make a perfect snack or quick dinner served with salsa for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 pound lean ground beef, ground turkey, or chicken
  • 1 Tablespoon taco seasoning
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrot (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped bell pepper or baby spinach (optional)

Assembly

  • 2 pie crusts, defrosted but unbaked
  • 1/3 cup shredded Mexican cheese
  • 1 egg, for brushing
  • Salsa, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat until fully browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess grease. Stir in the taco seasoning along with shredded carrot and chopped bell pepper or spinach if using, cook for another 2-3 minutes until vegetables are slightly softened. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to preheat while preparing the hand pies.
  3. Assemble Hand Pies: Roll out each pie crust on a lightly floured surface. Cut each crust into 4 equal squares. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture on one half of each square, sprinkle with shredded Mexican cheese. Fold the dough over to form a triangle or rectangle and press the edges together firmly, sealing with a fork.
  4. Brush with Egg Wash: Beat the egg and brush it over the tops of each hand pie to promote a golden brown finish when baked.
  5. Bake: Arrange the hand pies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden and cooked through.
  6. Serve: Allow the hand pies to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm with salsa for dipping.

Notes

  • Feel free to customize the filling with your favorite veggies or protein alternatives.
  • Make sure to seal the edges well to prevent the filling from leaking during baking.
  • Leftover hand pies can be reheated in the oven or air fryer for a crispy texture.
  • To make this recipe vegetarian, substitute the meat with seasoned cooked beans or a meat alternative.
