Base Cupcakes
Spider Cupcake Decoration
- ½ cup prepared chocolate frosting
- 8 strips red licorice
- 12 candy-coated milk chocolate pieces (such as M&M’s®)
Worm Cupcake Decoration
- ½ cup prepared chocolate frosting
- ¼ cup chocolate cookie crumbs
- 4 gummy worm candies
Graveyard Cupcake Decoration
- 1 cup prepared chocolate frosting
- 4 rectangular or oval sandwich cookies (such as Milano®)
- ¼ cup chocolate cookie crumbs
- Prepare the base cupcakes: Start with 12 unfrosted cupcakes placed on a flat surface or serving platter, ready for decorating.
- Decorate Spider Cupcakes: Spread a thin layer of ½ cup prepared chocolate frosting on the top of each cupcake. Cut 8 strips of red licorice into appropriate leg lengths and arrange them radiating from the center of the cupcake to mimic spider legs. Place a candy-coated milk chocolate piece in the center to serve as the spider’s body.
- Decorate Worm Cupcakes: Spread ½ cup of prepared chocolate frosting on the cupcake surface. Sprinkle ¼ cup chocolate cookie crumbs evenly over the frosting to imitate dirt. Place 4 gummy worm candies partially embedded into the frosting and crumbs to look like worms emerging from soil.
- Decorate Graveyard Cupcakes: Generously spread 1 cup of prepared chocolate frosting on the top of each cupcake. Crumble ¼ cup chocolate cookie crumbs over the frosting to simulate dirt. Break 4 rectangular or oval sandwich cookies into tombstone shapes and stand or nestle them into the frosting and crumbs to create a graveyard effect.
Notes
- Use soft licorice for easy cutting and shaping of spider legs.
- Chocolate cookie crumbs can be made by crushing chocolate cookies finely.
- To keep cupcakes fresh, store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Mix up decorations on cupcakes to provide variety for guests.
- Gluten-free or vegan versions can use suitable alternative cupcakes and decorations.
