Dinner Rolls:
- 1 cup whole milk (240g), warm (around 110°F)
- 3 teaspoons active dry yeast or instant yeast
- ⅓ cup sugar (70g)
- 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (490g)
- 1 large egg
- 1.5 teaspoons salt
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened at room temperature (85g)
- Egg wash: 1 egg yolk and 1 tablespoon milk
Garlic Butter:
- ¼ cup salted butter (57g)
- 2–3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1–2 tablespoons freshly chopped parsley
- Activate the yeast: Warm the whole milk to about 110°F to create an ideal environment for the yeast. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk with the active dry yeast and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Prepare the dough: To the yeast mixture, add the all-purpose flour, egg, salt, and softened unsalted butter. Mix these ingredients together until they form a cohesive dough.
- Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 6-7 minutes.
- First rise: Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Shape the rolls: Punch down the risen dough to release air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a smooth ball. Arrange the dough balls evenly spaced in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Second rise: Cover the arranged dough balls again and let them rise for about 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Apply egg wash: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Mix the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of milk to make the egg wash. Brush the tops of the rolls gently with this egg wash to help them develop a golden crust.
- Bake the rolls: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Make garlic butter: While the rolls are baking, melt the salted butter in a small pan over low heat. Add finely chopped garlic and cook gently until fragrant but not browned. Remove from heat and stir in freshly chopped parsley.
- Glaze the rolls: Once the rolls come out of the oven, immediately brush the warm garlic butter generously over the tops of all the rolls for an added burst of flavor and moisture.
- Serve warm: Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. These dinner rolls are best enjoyed warm with extra butter or as a complement to your favorite main dishes.
Notes
- Ensure the milk is not too hot when activating yeast, as temperatures above 120°F can kill the yeast.
- You can substitute salted butter for unsalted in the dough if preferred, adjusting salt accordingly.
- For a softer crust, cover the rolls with foil during the last 5 minutes of baking.
- These rolls freeze well—cool completely, freeze in an airtight bag, and reheat in the oven before serving.
- Garlic butter can be prepared ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
