This colorful Easter Puppy Chow recipe is a fun and festive sweet snack that features Chex Rice Cereal coated with pastel candy melts and dusted with confectioner’s sugar. Perfect for Easter celebrations or springtime gatherings, this treat combines crunchy cereal with smooth, melted candy coating for a delightful bite-sized indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale

Candy Coating

  • ½ bag pink Wilton Candy Melts
  • ½ bag purple Wilton Candy Melts
  • ½ bag blue Wilton Candy Melts
  • ¾ tsp shortening (like Crisco), divided (¼ tsp for each color)

Cereal and Coating

  • 6 cups Chex Rice Cereal
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar (adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Divide Candy Melts: Separate the Wilton candy melts evenly into three different microwave-safe bowls, one for each color.
  2. Melt Candy: Microwave each bowl of candy melts for 45 seconds, stir well, then microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Stir again and heat for another 30 seconds until fully melted and smooth.
  3. Add Shortening: Stir ¼ teaspoon shortening into each bowl of melted candy. This step helps thin the candy for easier and smoother coating of the cereal.
  4. Coat the Cereal: Place 2 cups of Chex Rice Cereal into separate large Ziploc bags for each color. Pour one color of melted candy into a bag, seal, and gently shake and roll to evenly coat the cereal pieces without crushing them. Repeat for all three colors.
  5. Spread and Sugar Coat: Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper and pour one bag of coated cereal onto it. Spread the cereal flat. Using a sifter, dust confectioner’s sugar evenly over the cereal. Gently lift the waxed paper by the edges and roll the cereal around to thoroughly coat it with sugar. Repeat as necessary for desired coverage.
  6. Chill to Set: Place the cookie sheet with coated cereal in the refrigerator for about five minutes to let the candy harden.
  7. Repeat for Each Color: Repeat the spreading, sugar coating, and chilling steps for the remaining two colors of the candy-coated cereal.
  8. Optional Decoration: For extra fun, sprinkle colored sugar or Easter-themed sprinkles on the candy-coated cereal before dusting with confectioner’s sugar.

Notes

  • This recipe yields about 6 cups of Easter Puppy Chow, serving approximately 8 people.
  • If the candy melts are too thick, add a little shortening to thin them out for better coating consistency.
  • Swap in other pastel candy melt colors to customize for your Easter or spring theme.
  • Adjust confectioner’s sugar quantity to your preferred sweetness and powdery texture.
  • Shake and roll the cereal bags gently to avoid crushing the cereal pieces.
  • Add Easter sprinkles or colored sanding sugar before coating with confectioner’s sugar for more festive flair.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week to maintain freshness.
  • Package in clear bags or mason jars with ribbons to create charming Easter gifts or party favors.
