Perfect for parties or as a whimsical treat, this no-fuss cake combines rich chocolate flavors with a smooth, creamy texture and crunchy cookie topping.

Ingredients

Scale

CAKE:

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients specified on the box)

PUDDING LAYER:

  • 12.8 oz hot fudge
  • 3.4 oz chocolate instant pudding mix
  • 1 ¾ cups milk

TOPPING:

  • 30 Oreos, crushed
  • 8 oz cool whip, thawed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake: Follow the instructions on the chocolate cake mix box to prepare the batter, then bake the cake as directed.
  2. Cool and Poke Holes: After baking, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Using the end of a spoon, poke holes evenly across the entire cake surface to allow the hot fudge to seep in.
  3. Apply Hot Fudge: Warm the hot fudge in the microwave until it is pourable. Evenly pour the hot fudge over the cake, allowing it to fill the holes and soak into the cake layers. Let the cake cool completely.
  4. Make Chocolate Pudding: In a medium bowl, whisk together the chocolate instant pudding mix and 1 ¾ cups of milk until smooth and slightly thickened. Pour this pudding layer over the cooled cake evenly. Refrigerate for about 20 minutes to chill and set the pudding layer.
  5. Prepare Topping Mixture: In another medium bowl, mix the remaining instant pudding mix with milk as before and chill in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes until fully set.
  6. Combine Cool Whip and Oreos: Remove the pudding topping from the refrigerator and gently fold in the thawed cool whip. Then mix in about ¾ of the crushed Oreos to incorporate some cookie texture into the creamy topping.
  7. Finish the Cake: Spread the cool whip and Oreo mixture evenly over the pudding layer on the cake. Sprinkle the remaining crushed Oreos on top as a final garnish. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • This recipe is adapted from The Frugal Navy Wife.
  • Ensure the hot fudge is warmed to a pourable consistency to seep well into cake holes.
  • Chilling times help the pudding layers to set properly, resulting in cleaner slices and better texture.
  • For an extra touch, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a glass of cold milk.
