Completo Italiano is a popular Chilean-style hot dog topped generously with mashed avocado, fresh tomato, mayonnaise, and optional sauerkraut or coriander. This dish features soft, slightly larger hot dog buns filled with flavorful beef or pork sausages and a creamy, tangy blend of avocado topped with fresh vegetables, perfect for a flavorful snack or casual meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausages and Buns

  • 4 hot dog buns (soft, slightly larger style)
  • 4 beef or pork sausages (about 400 g / 14 oz)

Avocado Topping

  • 2 ripe avocados (about 300 g / 10.5 oz), mashed
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (15 ml)
  • 12 tbsp olive oil (1530 ml)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Vegetables and Garnish

  • 1 medium tomato (150 g / 5 oz), finely diced
  • ½ small onion (optional), finely chopped
  • Mayonnaise (about 120 g / 4 oz), for generous piping
  • Optional: sauerkraut or coriander (fresh coriander leaves)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Avocado Topping: In a bowl, mash the ripe avocados with lemon juice, olive oil, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste and set aside.
  2. Cook the Sausages: Grill, pan-fry, or boil the sausages until they are fully cooked, browned, and heated through, about 8-10 minutes depending on the method. Ensure sausages reach a safe internal temperature.
  3. Prepare the Vegetables: Finely dice the medium tomato and, if using, finely chop the onion. Combine them lightly if desired to distribute evenly as topping.
  4. Toast the Buns (Optional): Lightly toast the hot dog buns to add texture and slight crispness.
  5. Assemble the Completo Italiano: Place a cooked sausage inside each bun. Generously pipe mayonnaise along the sausage. Add a layer of the mashed avocado mixture on top. Sprinkle with diced tomato and onions. Add optional sauerkraut or fresh coriander leaves as desired.
  6. Serve: Serve immediately while the sausage is warm and the bun is fresh. Enjoy this iconic Chilean hot dog with a side of chips or salad if preferred.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of lemon juice in the avocado to your taste to balance creaminess and tang.
  • You can substitute beef or pork sausages with chicken or vegetarian sausages for variation.
  • The mayonnaise is traditionally piped generously, so feel free to be liberal with it for authentic flavor.
  • Sauerkraut adds a nice tangy crunch but is optional depending on your preference.
  • Fresh coriander leaves give a bright herbal note if sauerkraut is not used.
  • To speed up preparation, pre-cooked sausages can be used but grilling or pan-frying adds extra flavor.
